The cabinet that can be glimpsed through the open door in the watercolor Mjölkkammardörren står öppen (The Dairy Room Door Standing Open) was used when most farmers made their own sour milk (a food that is still popular in Sweden). It took seven days for milk to “ripen”. Each morning a bowl of fresh milk was placed on the top shelf of the cabinet and the other bowls were moved down one shelf. The bowl from the bottom shelf held the completed sour milk!
